Biomedical Catalyst Scheme

Developmental Pathway Funding Scheme

This scheme supports the translation of fundamental discoveries toward benefits to human health.  It funds the pre-clinical development and early clinical testing of novel therapeutics, devices and diagnostics, including “repurposing” of existing therapies.

Further information on DPFS funding is available from the MRC and your Faculty Research & Innovation Office.

Academically led projects should make their applications through the MRC DPFS route.

Biomedical Catalyst Scheme

This scheme is funded jointly by the MRC and the TSB and builds on the MRC’s Developmental Pathway Funding Scheme (DPFS). It:

  • Provides innovation support for medical projects ranging from feasibility or “confidence in concept” through to late stage R&D (up to and including phase 2 clinical studies);
  • Supports UK SMEs to develop innovative solutions to healthcare challenges in collaboration with the University.
Award categories

There are three categories of grant are available: Feasibility Award, Early Stage Award and Late Stage Award. These categories are designed to support the maturation of an idea from concept to commercialisation.  This will create a pipeline of projects encompassing the early stage exploration of commercial and technical potential through to proving utility in the field (which may involve human clinical trials) and development prior to commercialisation.

Applying for an award.  Applicants may apply for the award category most appropriate for their work without having received a prior award.  The Biomedical Catalyst Scheme will operate in response mode and will be "always open".  However to assist the processing of applications there will be key submission and assessment dates which will differ depending on the category of award and applicant type.  The assessment of Early and Late Stage awards will culminate in a panel assessment enabling funding decisions to be made three times a year.

Business led projects should apply through the TSB Biomedical Catalyst route.
