Public Engagement

Public Engagement with Research offers a way to increase the impact of your research.

We use the terms PE for Public Engagement and PPIE for Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement. Other terms are co-production, co-creation or partnership working.

Collaboration is the underlying spirit of PE. This needs respect, cooperation, communication, building trust and the belief that together we are better off than on our own.

The hallmark of PE is that it is characterised by mutual benefit, as defined by the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE):

Public engagement describes the myriad of ways in which the activity and benefits of higher education and research can be shared with the public. Engagement is by definition a two-way process, involving interaction and listening, with the goal of generating mutual benefit.

PE can happen at all stages of the research cycle when developing, doing or disseminating research.

Our strategic direction for PE is governed by the University’s Research and Innovation strategy and the Engaging for Research Impact Strategy. The University renewed its commitment to PE in 2018 by signing the manifesto for PE.

How can we support you?

The PE team offers bespoke professional advice, assistance and some resources on engaging the public with research.

We advise on getting started with public engagement, help you develop your ideas for engagement and explain the channels and events which already exist.

We also provide peer review for public engagement plans in research proposals and can help you cost your activities.
